Peri Menopause & Supplements...Naomh's Experience
Choosing the right vitamins and supplements to support your physical and mental health as you reach peri-menopause can be a minefield.
@donna buchanan
Having moved into that stage in my life, let’s just say I’ve done extensive research. So, from one woman to another (while mindful our bodies are all different) I wanted to share my experience of the key supplements that help me stay fit, strong and energised.
Mind you, I’m no nutritionist, so before you try any it’s best to check with your doctor first, especially if you’re on other medications. Gut health is also important, because without it your body will struggle to absorb the goodness and you could have spend that money elsewhere.
PROTEIN
During menopause we begin to lose oestrogen, progesterone and collagen. Counteract it by increasing your protein levels. It will help produce hormones and repair muscle and tissue.

B Vitamins are a whole universe in themselves so I’ll do a dedicated blog post on them in the coming weeks.
MAGNESIUM CITRATE (High potency – Solgar)
Magnesium is important for everyone to take but especially throughout menopause as it regulates muscle and nerve function, is good for blood pressure, and makes protein, bone and DNA. It also helps combat depression and regulates sleep (I usually take one an hour or two before bedtime).

VITAMIN C
A classic. I always have Vitamin C to hand because it does so much. It helps to produce collagen, maintain connective tissue and heal wounds. It also strengthens the immune system, and helps absorb iron that we need to combat fatigue. Not to mention strong antioxidant properties to iron out any wrinkles.
VITAMIN D
You’ll find these in your Menomin capsule, but, on its own, Vitamin D plays a vital role in regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and helps maintain normal immune system function.
It’s essential for growth of bones and teeth, so is increasingly important as we get older because it increases bone density, which helps prevent osteoporosis and osteopenia.
